Oil Change & Filter Service Vista

The infamous ‘Oil Change’, or by its less known name ‘The Most Uninteresting Way To Spend An Afternoon’ is like a haircut, something you do a few times per year but without the self-image boost. If you do it consistently nobody even really notices if you forget it, EVERYONE KNOWS.

You see an Oil Change doesn’t add an extra 20 HP or make your car glide down the road like a Ferrari. However, what it does do is keep your car running. Yep, that’s fairly important.

The simplest explanation is your BMW or Mercedes-Benz engine runs by a series of mini explosions within the engine to create power. To make this happen you have hundreds of small parts that work together in an extremely hot engine.

The oil in your engine is the lubrication between all of that friction to keep your engine running smooth. If you wait too long to change your oil or just forget, your oil breaks down and turns into sludge, which could cause your engine to cease up, the only solution to that is to rebuild your engine or go buy another car.

It seems like a mundane basic service, however, it’s the most important service you can do to keep your vehicle on the road.

What is the deal with the Oil Filter?

The Oil Filter is there to clean the oil and make it last as long as possible, once you hit that 3,000-5,000 miles or 7,000 for some synthetic oils it needs to be replaced.  You should always replace the oil filter during the service to get the best performance out of the new oil.

Choosing Between Synthetic Vs Regular Vs Synthetic Blend Oils

Synthetic vs regular vs synthetic blend oils. There are many motor oils to choose from and engine oil manufacturers typically offer conventional oils, but will also include in their lineup synthetic, and even synthetic-blended engine oils as well.
For this reason, an oil change can be a complicated affair, especially when choosing the right engine oil to use.

Conventional motor oil, also known as “regular” oil, is refined from petroleum and includes additives that lubricate, cool and clean the moving parts and bearing surfaces of an engine. Conventional oil changes are affordable and offer protection when operating vehicles during hot summer days and freezing nights. However, conventional oil will gradually break down, creating sludge in your engine and induce damaging engine friction in the process. Due to this, frequent oil changes are necessary.
Synthetic oil, made from synthesized chemical compounds, is highly refined into base molecules. Combined with additives, synthetic oils boast superior lubrication and cooling properties over conventional oil. This allows synthetic oils to excel in unforgiving climates and extreme temperatures. While synthetic oil changes are traditionally more expensive due to their highly refined nature and manufacture, time between oil changes is less frequent than conventional oil changes.
Synthetic blend oil, also known as “semi-synthetic” oil, is a blend between conventional and synthetic motor oils. The result is engine oil that achieves a middle ground between price and performance. While synthetic-blended oil does not perform as well as full synthetic engine oil, it largely addresses the shortcomings of conventional oil. Typically, the price point and oil change frequency of synthetic-blended engine oil will fall between conventional and synthetic oils.
If in doubt regarding the type of engine oil specified for your passenger vehicle, refer to the owner’s manual for engine oil requirements. Also keep in mind what type of oil do you thinks most chains use when they offer you a discount oil change.
If it’s lower quality, and your engine suffers. Is it really savings in the long run?
